Paralympian Petitclerc named Canada?s chef de mission for Commonwealth Games
Chantal Petitclerc has been named Canada?s chef de mission at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in a move she said shows the major support for Paralympic sport in this country.
?As far as we know, it is the first time for a Paralympic athlete to be chef de mission in a multisport Games,? Petitclerc said Saturday.

The 42-year-old is one of Canada?s most decorated athletes. She holds world records over three different wheelchair distances, and has raced to 21 Paralympic medals including 14 gold.
She captured five golds at both the 2004 Paralympics in Athens and 2008 Games in Beijing.
Petitclerc has a special connection to the Commonwealth Games, carrying Canada?s flag into the stadium for the opening ceremonies in 2006 in Melbourne, Australia.
?The Commonwealth Games have always paved the route in terms of inclusion, they were the very first to have full medal status for Paralympic events in 2002 with wheelchair racing, and in Glasgow it will be the biggest ever number of Para sport events with 22 medal events,? Petitclerc said.
?They are a model to follow in terms of inclusion and so I?m even happier to be a part of that.?
Petitclerc won gold over 800 metres in both the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games.
?There are so many reasons to be thrilled with Chantal?s appointment,? Andrew Pipe, the president of Commonwealth Games Canada, said in a statement. ?A former flag bearer, multiple medallist, and someone with a deep appreciation for the athlete experience at the highest levels of international competition.?
Petitclerc follows in the footsteps of a couple of other Canadian sporting stars who?ve acted as chef de mission. Speedskater Nathalie Lambert had the role for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, cyclist Curt Harnett was Canada?s chef at the Pan American Games last year, while swimmer Mark Tewksbury had the job at the London Olympics this past summer.
?I think athletes do have a lot to offer when they do retire and that?s one of the places that we can give back to our sport because we?ve been there. We know what it takes, and we know how it is to be an athlete on a team,? Petitclerc said.
?One of my motivations is that I know that the hard work is done by the athlete and their coaches, but I also know that a good positive organized dynamic constructive team can make a difference between a good and a great performance and experience.?
Petitclerc was a coach with the United Kingdom team at the London Paralympics, but moved home to Montreal when her contract expired following the Games. Her first major task in her new job will be a site visit in February.
The Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July of 2014 will feature 17 sports over 11 days of competition.
Canada was fourth in total medals at the 2010 Games in New Delhi, India.

The man behind the popular Metal Gear Solid franchise has finally revealed a few more details about the film adaptation of the stealth action game.
Aware of the fact that the fans are desperate to hear about what the director of the franchise has in store for them, Kojima did not keep them waiting and shared a few more details of the upcoming film during a developer session at the Eurogamer Expo, which was attended by VC247.
One of the biggest revelations made by him and one that the fans were really anxious to know was that the film will star Solid Snake as the main protagonist.
It was being speculated that the film may start off with Big Boss instead of Solid Snake, but the team behind the film has deemed it more appropriate to follow the order of the Metal Gear Solid video games, the first of which had the same man in the limelight that has been given the torch in the film.
The fans are expected to support this decision as they would not want to see too many experiments being made.
Another thing that the fans were really interested in knowing was the role that the director of the Metal Gear Solid franchise would be playing as far as the film was concerned.
He finally ended the suspense on this matter as well by revealing that he would neither be directing the film, nor work on the script. Instead, he would be attached with the team by taking on a more supervisory role.
While it is not clear what he would be doing in this role, everyone would be hoping to see Kojima involved in everything since he is the man with the magic touch.
One more thing revealed at the Eurogamer Expo was what both he and Avi Arad, the producer of the film, have planned as far as the actor playing the role of Solid Snake is concerned.
He admitted that initially they had planned on casting Hugh Jackman, Wolverine from X-Men, for the role, but later rejected this idea. Instead, they plan on bringing in a new-comer for the role of Solid Snake.
It remains to be seen how the film turns out. The fans would definitely be keeping their fingers crossed since the film adaptations of video games do not enjoy a very good reputation.

PARIS (AP) ? Paris fashion has no boundaries and no borders.
Thursday's cultural melting pot of spring-summer 2013 shows was proof enough.
Curious designers, thirsty for new inspiration, ventured across the globe to bring new ideas and exotic cultures back to the catwalk.
Manish Arora traveled to northwestern India's Rajasthan to bring Paris a vibrant infusion of traditional Indian dress and lavish regal jewelry.
Balmain's creative nomad Olivier Rousteing, meanwhile, replaced last season's muse ? the Russian Empire's Faberge Egg ? to travel to the artisanal wicker-weavers of Cuba to give his in-vogue summer black collection a unique panache.
Barbara Bui, who also channeled black, joined the expedition with geometric American Indian prints and tribal-looking dresses and foulards.
Taking another tack, Nina Ricci, forever a romantic Parisian gamine, traveled decades back in time to produce a nostalgic show with a modern twist.
Friday's collections include Roland Mouret and Issey Miyake, as well as the debut ready-to-wear show for new Christian Dior designer Raf Simons.
BALMAIN
To welcome in next spring, some designers in Paris have said it with flowers. Balmain said it with wicker.
Never one to travel with the crowd, 27-year-old designer Olivier Rousteing used artisanal Cuban wicker-weaving as a vehicle for his signature graphic silhouettes.
Rousteing ? who on Thursday completed a full year at the helm of the iconic French fashion house ? possesses a roving eye for cultural artifacts. Strong shouldered, highly structured looks came with cropped tops, lashings of jewel and slices of torso at his Paris Fashion Week show.
Yet the high point was the wicker-embellished cropped jackets that growled like a fierce, feminine exoskeleton.
Rousteing's 3-D woven straw evoked a baroque mood, a feeling that was echoed by lavish diamond checkerboard patterns ? a replica of the polished marble flooring of the Versailles Palace.
No doubt Rousteing will pass his annual job review.
MANISH ARORA
India ? home to over a billion people and one of the most colorful cultures in the world ? is a limitless creative touchstone for designers. So it's surprising that Mumbai-born Manish Arora ? perhaps the subcontinent's most famous designer ? has not delved into its rich fashion encyclopedia before.
That is until now.
Arora presented a spicy and bohemian homage to his homeland for spring-summer 2013 at Paris Fashion Week.
But why now?
"Luckily, this year I was very attracted toward jewelry: Is there a better place to draw inspiration?" said Arora, dressed in a flamboyant gold top.
Arora took us by the bejeweled hand down a goldmine of revamped traditional Indian dress. Angrakha dresses with orange patterns were set of boldly with a shiny chainmail pant, alongside geometric prints of tigers, panthers and antelope.
However, the show was really about the jewelry, as sublime ornamentation reigned in some of the collection's more garish looks. At one point there were gasps as the Maharaja's daughter came down the catwalk: Resplendent in a standout gold face-band that circled the bottom of the eyes.
NINA RICCI
There's been nostalgia in the air at Nina Ricci of late.
This was certainly the case in Peter Copping's deceptively complex spring-summer 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week, which floated ethereally by and matched the vintage feeling of last season's show.
Perhaps the mood was set by the millions of falling cherry blossoms ? which mark the end of spring ? that opened the presentation.
Or perhaps it was the floaty chiffon tops, the gentle pleated skirts, the halter necks, the flowing fringing or the soft silhouettes that harked to bygone days of the 20's and 30's.
Although the show opened with black designs, it melted like winter into spring, shifting into dusty colors of silver gray, blush pink, red and pale lavender.
Touches like zippers kept it modern for an accomplished, commanding show ? the most feminine display so far this season in Paris.
But Copping needn't be feeling nostalgic himself ? this collection shows he has a bright future with the fashion house.
BARBARA BUI
"Black is back for summer," declared Barbara Bui, following her saleable, and typically feminine collection for spring-summer 2013.
The French-Vietnamese designer opened the show true to her word, with a series of sexy-looking black nappa ensembles.
Bui, known to have an eye on her youthful clientele, ticked the on-trend box with her gentle masculine tailored-jackets, which led the eye down provocatively to skintight pants or inches of leg.
Singing the spirit of spring's first bloom, Bui then let float by a diaphanous series of sheer organza blouses.
Fluttering layers and contrasting pockets endowed the cornflower blue and flesh colored looks an interesting textural play.
Unfortunately, the message of harmony got lost by the end ? diluted by a confusing series of geometric American Indian patterns with conflicting silhouettes.

LAKESIDE, Calif. (AP) ? Two sheriff's deputies and a suspected child molester were injured Tuesday during a 15-minute shootout in suburban San Diego, authorities said.
Daniel Robert Witczak, 30, opened fire as a team of deputies arrived to investigate allegations of child abuse, the sheriff's department said in a statement.
Sgt. Craig Johnson and Detective Ali Perez were wounded in the exchange of gunfire at an apartment in Lakeside, a semi-rural community east of San Diego. Sheriff Bill Gore declined to specify their injuries but said in the statement that the department was "hopeful and cautiously optimistic" about their recovery.
Witczak's girlfriend had alleged that she found pornographic pictures of her two daughters, ages 6 and 8, on his cellphone, according U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/RVqQrq).
The girlfriend met with investigators and called Witczak with detectives listening in to confront him about the photos. Witczak told her he was offered $50,000 to post the images on the Internet.
The woman, who was not identified by the newspaper to protect her children's identities, said she heard deputies arrive at the apartment while she was on the phone. She said she heard gunshots and someone say, "Officers down."
The woman told the newspaper that the boyfriend said he shot himself and she heard him surrender.
Sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser said investigators don't believe Witczak shot himself, and that Perez and Johnson were outside the door when Witczak fired at them.
Witczak's condition was unknown.
Jeffrey Miller heard gunshots and came out of his apartment and saw deputies pulling another deputy on to the grass. "It was kind of confusing, everything was happening," he said.
The apartment is near El Capital High School, which was locked down briefly. Residents were evacuated from the apartment complex, and surrounding streets were closed.
Fraser said the last time two San Diego sheriff's deputies were involved in a single shooting was in the 1980s.
"We had two of our deputies shot today in the line of duty," Gore said. "It's a constant reminder of how dangerous this job is that we do every day."

Amy Bishop, avoided a death sentence by admitting earlier this month to gunning down her colleagues during a biology department staff meeting at the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
Alabama law requires a jury to decide the punishment and confirm a guilty plea for a capital murder charge.
Bishop's defense attorneys did not contest the facts of the case during the abbreviated proceedings on Monday.
"She has admitted she did these terrible things," defense attorney Robert Tuten said in his opening statement.
Bishop, a Harvard-trained biologist and mother of four, was accused of shooting her colleagues execution-style in February 2010. Colleagues believed Bishop was angry that the school had denied her tenure.
The trial on Monday took less than two hours and featured only two witnesses. One was Bishop's former colleague Debra Moriarity, who recalled how she tried to take Bishop down after the woman started firing during the meeting.
Trying to stop shooting
Trained in gun safety by her hunter father, Moriarity testified that she ducked and crawled under a table to grab Bishop's legs.
"I was yelling, 'Stop, Amy! Stop! Don't do this!'" said Moriarity, who is now chairwoman of the biology department.
Moriarity said Bishop then pointed the gun at her. As Moriarity begged for her life, Bishop repeatedly pulled the trigger but the gun jammed, Moriarity testified. She said Bishop was silent during the attack.
As a police investigator showed jurors photos of the dead professors on Monday, Bishop put her head on the defense table and softly sobbed. Bishop, who last year had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, did not speak during the trial.
After her arrest in Alabama, authorities in Braintree, Massachusetts, charged Bishop with the 1986 shooting death of her teenage brother.
Authorities in Massachusetts were awaiting the outcome of the Alabama trial before deciding how to proceed in their case.
Jurors on Monday did not have to weigh Bishop's guilt in the attempted murder charges, for which Circuit Judge Alan Mann sentenced her to three consecutive life sentences.
After the trial, professor Joseph Leahy, who lost an eye in the shooting and has just returned to teaching, said he felt the verdict was just.
"Seeing the photos was tough - I was seeing the bodies of my friends," he said. "They took the first three shots, and I got the fourth. I feel fortunate to be alive."

The Mythic Love Poem

Poets have insistently used myth to help them address love, that grand ineffable. It?s handy?a character can be brought onstage and animated without the poet having to belabor the back story. Myths that rest on a few key elements seem especially useful. Cupid, the ?little love god,? is one example. Hallmark reminds us each February just what an arrow from his quiver equals. Another useful mythic character is Helen, the beautiful, half-mortal love-child of Zeus and Leda (or Nemesis) who was hatched from an egg.
Helen is lustful love incarnate. The myth variously represents her as either having been abducted by Paris of Troy or as having run off with Paris while her husband Menelaus was away. Regardless, she and her seductive beauty are held responsible for the subsequent 10-year war between Sparta and Troy?representing the enormous power that gets attached to sexualized female beauty. In Christopher Marlowe?s Doctor Faustus, Faustus begs Helen to transfer her immortality to him by way of a classic movie smooch, ?Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss?; sexuality plus beauty (?the face that launch?d a thousand ships?) is a formula for fame and Helen is ancient evidence of it.
Helen?s beauty is often associated with ?whiteness? and light. For Faustus, she is ?Clad in the beauty of a thousand stars; Brighter art thou than flaming Jupiter.? In Oscar Wilde?s ?The New Helen? she is: ?Lily of love, pure and inviolate!/ Tower of ivory!? who ?come[s] down our darkness to illume.? In Poe?s ?To Helen? she stands: ?statue-like?: The agate lamp within thy hand,/ Ah! Psyche, from the regions which/ Are Holy Land!? And in Margaret Atwood?s more recent parodic ?Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing,? she rises: ?Like breath or a balloon ... in [a] blazing swan-egg of light.?
It?s not surprising to have erotic heat described as white-hot. And light/fire is power, which is why Prometheus got into trouble with the gods. H.D. (1886-1961), in her ?Helen,? reverses desire?s white heat and makes white the color of icy hatred. White appears three times in the first nine lines. The reiteration?especially when combined with ?lustre? (shine/gleam/glitter, but also glory/honor/fame) and ?cool feet??effectively turns Helen into a cold-footed/cold-blooded polished-marble statue. Rather than love, the clenched-jaw sparseness of the poem also gestures to hate. The rhyme scheme, irregular but adamant, avoids seeming too studied and yet creates a taut cohesiveness, as if an explosive charge is contained, but barely.
In the Iliad, Helen confronts Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and accuses her of sexual envy; Helen then disguises herself before going to Paris? room, lest the tongue-wagging women of Troy gossip about her. This moment essentially establishes the binary of lustful-hussy goddess (blissful libidinous boundlessness) and ?good-girl? Helen, who's conflicted about sex. Helen is a woman cursed with a form of beauty that is sexually alluring. In most of literature, Helen?s the mythic version of Jayne Mansfield, ?the girl [who] can?t help it,? but with serious consequences. In H.D.?s poem, Helen isn?t seen through the eyes of an appreciative lover, but of the envious mob. She?s the dangerous woman, one the haters would be willing to burn at the stake. Her powerful sexuality makes her universally despised, both by those who can?t have her and by those who can?t allow themselves to be her. The word ?white? returns in the last line of the poem to modify ?ash?; white-hot sexuality and white-hot hatred merge, leaving only scattered funereal ash. Now there?s nothing not to love. Some contemporary poets have grown suspicious of ancient myth?finding it fussy, even snooty?H.D.?s use of it conveys a keen psychological intelligence, unsurprising perhaps in a poet who will find her way to Freud nine years after publishing this poem.
