(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI broke his silence Wednesday over the leaked documents scandal that has convulsed the Vatican, saying he was saddened by the betrayal but grateful to those aides who work faithfully and in silence to help him do his job.

Benedict made his first direct comments on the scandal in off-the-cuff remarks at the end of his weekly general audience. He lashed out at some of the media reports about the scandal, saying the "exaggerated" and "gratuitous" rumors had offered a false image of the Holy See.

The Italian media have been in a frenzy ever since the pope's butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested last week after Vatican investigators discovered papal documents in his Vatican City apartment. He remains in detention and has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.

Rumors have been flying in the press about possible cardinals implicated in the probe, pending resignations and details of the investigation that even Gabriele's lawyers say they haven't heard. The Vatican spokesman has spent much of his daily briefings in recent days shooting down the various reports.

The scandal represents one of the greatest breaches of trust and security for the Holy See in recent memory given that a significant number of documents from the pope's own desk were leaked to an investigative journalist. The Vatican has denounced the leaks as criminal and immoral and has opened a three-pronged investigation to get to the bottom of who was responsible.

"The events of recent days about the Curia and my collaborators have brought sadness in my heart," Benedict said at the end of his audience. But he added: "I want to renew my trust in and encouragement of my closest collaborators and all those who every day, with loyalty and a spirit of sacrifice and in silence, help me fulfill my ministry."

Few people think Gabriele worked alone, and his promise to cooperate with the investigation has fueled speculation that other might be arrested soon.

The motivations for the leaks remain unclear: Some commentators say they appear designed to discredit Benedict's No. 2, the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. Others say they're aimed at undermining the Vatican's efforts to become more financially transparent. Still others say they aim to show the 85-year-old Benedict's weakness in running the church.

The scandal is playing out in a remarkable way, due in great part to the uniqueness of the institution in which it's occurring and the players involved.

Gabriele is an employee of the Holy See, a citizen and resident of the Vatican city state. He is being held by Vatican police who have accused him of stealing the pope's personal papers in a terrible breach of trust. His lawyers are Italian legal professionals, but they are communicating to the media via the Vatican spokesman ? a conflict of interest that the Rev. Federico Lombardi has acknowledged but tried to downplay by saying he was merely offering a service to release information to the media.

Lombardi refers to Gabriele as "Paolo" and has repeatedly expressed sadness for what has happened. At the same time, though, the Vatican undersecretary of state, Archbishop Angelo Becciu, lashed out at what he called an unprecedented, "brutal" attack on the pope that the leaks represent.

In an interview Tuesday with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Becciu said the stolen papers didn't just concern matters of internal church governance but represented the thoughts of people who in writing to the pope believed they were essentially speaking before God.

"It's not just that the pope's papers were stolen, but that people who turned to him as the vicar of Christ have had their consciences violated," Becciu was quoted as saying.

The scandal broke in January when Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi revealed letters from a former top Vatican administrator who begged the pope not to transfer him for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros (dollars) in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

The scandal widened over the following months with documents leaked to Italian journalists that laid bare power struggles inside the Vatican over its efforts to show greater financial transparency and comply with international norms to fight money laundering. There was even a leak of a memo claiming that Benedict would die this year.

The crisis reached a peak last weekend, when Nuzzi published an entire book based on a trove of new documentation, including personal correspondence to and from the pope and his private secretary, much of which paints Bertone in a negative light.

The Vatican has warned of legal action for those who stole, received and disseminated the documents. Nuzzi, who in 2009 published a book on leaked documents from the Vatican bank, has justified the publication as an act of transparency and says there's not a word against the pope or the church in the book.

Dolphins to appear on 'Hard Knocks' this summer

(AP) ? The Miami Dolphins will appear on "Hard Knocks" this summer.

HBO announced Tuesday that the Dolphins would be the newest subject of its popular reality series documenting NFL training camps. The seventh season premieres Aug. 7, with four more one-hour episodes airing on subsequent Tuesdays.

Coming off a 6-10 season, Miami has a new coach in Joe Philbin. He said the Dolphins' involvement in the show was a football decision made with the blessing of owner Stephen Ross.

"Our owner supported this decision but in no way, shape or form forced us to make the decision," Philbin said in South Florida following an offseason practice Tuesday. "It's a chance to show the new direction and identity of this football team, where we're headed, and at the same time connect with our past, the great tradition and heritage we have here in Miami."

This season marks the 40th anniversary of the Dolphins' undefeated championship squad ? the last NFL club to win the Super Bowl with a perfect record. Miami's most recent title came a year later, in 1974.

"Hard Knocks" was not produced last year because of the NFL lockout. In 2010, the Dolphins' AFC East rivals, the New York Jets, were the subject of the show, making coach Rex Ryan a reality star.

"It's a great opportunity to connect with our fans, for the people who aren't going to be able to come out here daily in 110-degree heat index weather and watch our guys participate in training camp," Philbin said.

This is the first time "Hard Knocks" will feature a rookie head coach. Philbin was the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator the past five years, tutoring Aaron Rodgers and winning a Super Bowl. Philbin has a heart-wrenching back story ? his 21-year-old son drowned just before the longtime NFL assistant took the Dolphins job.

Miami will likely have a highly drafted rookie quarterback competing for playing time. Ryan Tannehill was the eighth pick overall, joining a franchise desperate for QB stability since Dan Marino retired.

For City's Teens, Stop And Frisk Is Black And White - WNYC

One in five people stopped last year by the New York City police department was a teenager between the ages of 14 and 18, according to a WNYC analysis of recently released police data.

Eighty-six percent of those teenagers who were stopped were either black or Latino, most of them boys.?

Last year, there were more than 120,000 stops of black and Latino kids between 14 and 18. The total number of black and Latino boys that age in the entire city isn?t much more than that ? about 177,000 ? which strongly suggests a teen male with dark skin in New York City will probably get stopped and frisked by the time he?s graduated from high school.

The debate about stop and frisk?s racial disparities comes down to opponents who say it racially profiles and supporters who say the people stopped fit the descriptions of most suspects. The conversation, until now, has been dominated by lawyers, politicians, police officials and community leaders.?

But ask junior high and high school students around the city, from affluent to low-income neighborhoods, and most appear to agree on one main premise:?who gets stopped and frisked has everything to do with where you live and what color your skin is.?

?We?re A Bunch of Skinny White Kids?

Last year, the NYPD stopped teenagers more than 140,000 times.

But at Stuyvesant High School in Lower Manhattan, which is 96 percent Asian and white, you would be hard pressed to find even one kid among the 3,300 students who has ever been stopped and frisked.

The students here, at one of the city?s most elite public high schools, are known to excel at academics. They are the eager students, the ones who raise their hands in class.?But ask them how many of them have ever been stopped and frisked by police, and what you get back is a sea of blank stares.

Victor Cai, is an Asian-American freshman who lives in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. He said it?s clear why he?s never been stopped and frisked: He doesn?t look like the part.

?They?re like hooded, in hoodies. They wear, like, very baggy clothing,? said Victor, describing someone who might appear suspicious to police.? ?And they?re African-American or Hispanic.?

Victor and his classmates point out a few other differences.?

We don?t look suspicious. We don?t look like scary criminals or terrorists, or whatever.? We?re very unthreatening people,? said Benedict Bolton, a 15-year-old freshman at Stuyvesant who is white. ?We?re a bunch of, to be honest, skinny white kids.?

Cross over to Brownsville, Brooklyn, where there aren?t many skinny white kids, and the story of stop and frisk suddenly becomes ?A Tale of Two Cities.??

The demographics of Teachers Preparatory High School in Brownsville are 99 percent black and Latino.? It takes only five minutes to find a group of 14-year olds here who say they have been stopped by police two, three, even seven times.

WNYC mapped the exact coordinates of every recorded stop of a teenager in 2011.?It turns out the densest hot spot for stop and frisks of teenagers last year was a four-block section of Brownsville, next to Teachers Preparatory High School, near the Marcus Garvey public housing projects.?

Brownsville is in the 73rd precinct, which has one of the highest violent crime rates in the city.

In this area alone, kids between 14 and 18 were stopped by police nearly 8,000 times in 2011. Within a three-block radius around Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, police stopped teens about 20 times last year.

Tyari Jenkins, a 14-year-old African-American student at Teachers Preparatory High School, said he has been stopped and frisked three times.?

(Photo: Malik Fleming, 14, has been stopped and frisked three times in Brownsville. Ailsa Chang/WNYC)

The first time was as a 12-year-old, when he was barely five feet tall, he said.?He had been walking out of his home to his friend?s house across the street.

?When I looked up, I see the cop.? He was like, ?You,? and I was like, ?Me??? He said, ?Yeah,?? Tyari recalled.? ?He said, ?Empty your book bag,? and I was like, ?Okay,? and I was taking my time.?Then he said, ?You need to hurry up.? And he started emptying my book bag and dropped my stuff on the ground.?

The officers asked for an ID.?Tyari said he left his at home, so the officers hauled him back home across the street and asked his mother to identify him.?After a few minutes, they left.

Tyari said he?s never been arrested for anything.?Neither have any of the other Brownsville kids who shared their stories.?They are now 14 years old, and all of them have been stopped by police between two and seven times.? ??

Emani Orr is an eighth grade student at P.S./I.S. 323, a school that is 99 percent black and Latino and nearby to Teachers Preparatory High School.?

Orr and her twin brother Zeandre were walking to the McDonald?s on Pitkin Avenue in Brownsville around 5 p.m. a few months ago when they were approached by police, she said.

?They was like, ?It?s too late for you all to be outside? but we was just walking,? she said.

Although she didn?t get patted down ? the officers explained it was because she was a girl ? Zeandre did.

?I guess it was just because we was two black kids in the neighborhood at night time walking around,? said Zeandre.

Ashley Fernandez (right), who?s Dominican and also an eighth grader at P.S./I.S. 323, said she started getting stopped by police when she was 12-years old.?

By her 14th birthday, she said she had been stopped by police between seven and eight times.?

Ashley thinks it?s because she dresses like a boy.?Her long hair is usually pulled back in a tight ponytail which she threads through an Oakland Raiders baseball cap.?She wears baggy T-shirts, sneakers and loose jeans.

?I don?t sag though, really, because I?m still a girl,? she said.

She said she usually gets stopped by police when leaving school for the day, and the stops seem to happen when she doesn?t have her backpack on, so she?s gotten used to wearing her school bag all the time.

One day when she was 12, she said police stopped her and a group of friends while they were walking to McDonald?s.

?They asked us where we coming from, and they asked us to see ID. And we said ?We 12, we don?t got ID,?? said Ashley.

She said the officers looked inside each of their book bags and asked if they were in a gang.?Everyone shook their heads.?The police moved on after five minutes.

But sometimes the police don?t move on after a few minutes.?

Anthony Henry, also an eighth grader from P.S./I.S. 323, was walking to school before 8 a.m. last month when a big jeep pulled up alongside him.?Five cops jumped out, he said.?

?And they were all like, ?Put your hands up? and stuff,? said Anthony.??They checked me, checked my book bag.?They threw all my books on the floor.?

The police started questioning him about drugs and gang members.?He said he didn?t know anyone in a gang.?They took him home, and his mom started yelling at the cops, telling them they had the wrong guy.?At that point, Anthony said one officer just patted him on the head, and said, ?My bad.??

By the time his mom drove him back to school, Anthony had already missed first and second period.?

?It made me feel, I dunno, retarded,? said Anthony.??Like a gangbanger.?Because only gangbangers get stopped for nothing, just for walking.?

?White Kids in Manhattan Have No Idea?

The Brownsville students who spoke to WNYC say they were never surprised when they actually got stopped.? Many of them already got that talk ? that talk with a parent about what to do when a police officer rolls up on you.?

Tyari Jenkins says his mom gave him the same advice she followed when she was growing up in Brownsville:

?When the cops come and stop you, just cooperate and do what they say.? Because if you do something bad, or if you get too violent, they can take you to jail.?They not the ones who?s going to get in trouble,? he said.

(Photo: Anthony Henry, 14, said he was stopped and frisked on his way to school at P.S./I.S. 323. When the police let him go, he said he already missed first and second period at school. Ailsa Chang/WNYC)

The police department has long defended stop and frisks as a way to bring down violent crime and get guns off the street. The NYPD did not return request for comment on this story.

Tyari said there are gang members in Brownsville ? lots of them ? his age.? But the police will stop everyone, he says, because to them, he said, everyone seems to look the same.?

?I think that?s discrimination because white kids in Manhattan have no idea cops can frisk you for no reason,? he said, ?like they walk past the cops and actually say, ?Good Morning? to them.?

But maybe some white kids in Manhattan do get it.?

Freshman Colby Goldberg of Stuyvesant High said he knows how different his life is from other 14-year-olds who live just nine miles away in places like Brownsville.

?If I was the same exact personality but born to a different family, with a different skin color, then that would totally change my, I guess, my life,? said Colby.??It?s a sad consequence of the way society is and the way society forces people to be.?

MIAMI (AP) ? In 2010, Boston ousted Dwyane Wade in the first round and LeBron James in the second round. A year later, Wade and James were teammates and turned the tables, sending the Celtics into the offseason.

Here comes the tiebreaker.

Celtics-Heat, one more time ? with a berth in the NBA finals as the reward.

For the fifth time in seven years, it'll be Boston or Miami winning the Eastern Conference championship. Game 1 of that title series is Monday night in Miami, with the Heat saying it almost seemed predestined that they would be seeing the Celtics again, and Boston's perspective being that the team in green is exactly where it expected to be as well.

"Inevitable. It's the matchup the game of basketball wants," Wade said Sunday afternoon. "Obviously, with the Chicago Bulls being out, this is the biggest matchup the Eastern Conference can have. So we accept the challenge and we look forward to the series."

Added Heat coach Erik Spoelstra: "Was there any doubt that it'd be us and Boston?"

Well, maybe a little.

Spoelstra watched Boston's Game 7 East semifinal matchup against Philadelphia without a notepad, not wanting to start game planning until the winner was decided. And that didn't come until late in the night, when Rajon Rondo ? forced into the closer's role after Paul Pierce fouled out with 4:16 left ? delivered time and again down the stretch, carrying the Celtics to an 85-75 closeout victory.

"This is a good time right now," Celtics forward Kevin Garnett said. "This is the cream of the cream. This is what it's all about, you know, conference finals. We definitely didn't like the way we left last year. So we'll see what happens, man. We'll see what happens. Let's get it on."

Miami beat Boston in five games in last year's East semifinals, and the Celtics took three of four games from Miami this season. Both sides cautioned against reading too much into any of those results.

James said the game changes in the playoffs, even more so as teams get deeper into it. The Celtics know what he wants to do, he knows what the Celtics will try, familiarity born from James having already faced Boston in 18 playoff games ? more than any other active player, and more than any club the reigning MVP has squared off with in the postseason.

"I wouldn't have it no other way, personally," James said. "It's really the only team I'm accustomed to playing in the playoffs. No matter where I go, I find a way to play Boston. ... We've got a lot of history."

James and the Cleveland Cavaliers lost in seven games to Boston in 2008. In 2010, the Celtics topped the Cavs in six games, one round after easily beating the Heat in a series punctuated by Wade vowing that he wouldn't lose another first-round series for a long time to come. Last season, Miami's five-game win was far from easy. And this time, the perception of the Celtics is that they're old, tired and weary.

The Heat dismiss those notions as "ridiculous," Spoelstra said.

"No. Get out of here with that," Wade said. "I don't believe none of that. No feet hurtin', no tired, no nothing. This is the Boston Celtics. They're all 100 percent to me because when they play the Miami Heat, different ballgame and vice versa. Ain't no story lines, no excuses. ... Last year, yeah, we beat them in five, but man, it was like a nine-game series, it felt like."

Boston did not hold practice Sunday, instead handing out scouting reports and flying to Miami. Celtics coach Doc Rivers was packed with the hopes of making a Miami trip even before Game 7 of the Philly series, just so he could take every possible moment after the game Saturday night to watch film of the Heat, and he planned more of the same on the three-hour flight from Boston.

"We'll be ready," Rivers said. "It's going to be a tough turnaround, but listen, we're not an excuse team. We'll be ready on Monday."

His players said they welcomed the short turnaround.

Ray Allen is hurting and Boston will be without Avery Bradley for the remainder of the season, but the Celtics indicated they would rather just jump into a Miami series and not wait around.

"I kind of like it for us," Pierce said. "It keeps us in rhythm. It keeps us playing. We're an older team so we get kind of stiff when we sit around for too long. We like the fact that we're going to go right into it."

The Celtics are averaging 88.1 points in the playoffs. James and Wade are averaging nearly 53 in the postseason by themselves, and combined to score 197 in the last three games ? all Miami wins ? in the second-round series against Indiana, responding to the Heat's need for them to carry more of the scoring load with Chris Bosh still sidelined indefinitely by a strained lower abdominal muscle. The Heat said Sunday night that Bosh took part in an on-court workout after practice, but it's still unknown when he will play again.

Clearly, a clash in styles is possible, and the Celtics are leery of what Miami can do in the open floor.

"We will lose in a track meet," Allen said. "This team, they get up and down the floor. They want to score in transition. They pride themselves off of getting easy baskets. Defensively, we have to get back. Offensively, we can't play with the ball, we can't turn the ball over, we can't not execute."

All the ingredients are there for drama.

Boston's Big Four against Miami's Big Three (minus one). A possible end to this Celtics run, at least with this current core. Miami trying to return to the title series, after falling last year. James' still-unfulfilled quest for a championship.

Both sides agree, this won't be easy for either club.

"It's great theater for the fans and everybody out there," Spoelstra said. "For us, it's great competition. That's what you want at this time of year."

Tropical Storm Beryl already was wrecking some Memorial Day weekend plans on Sunday, sending shoreline campers packing to head inland and canceling some events in the southeastern U.S.

Beryl was still well offshore, but officials in Georgia and Florida were already bracing for drenching rains and driving winds. Campers at Cumberland Island, which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

However, many people seemed determined to make the best of the soggy forecast.

At Greyfield Inn, a 19th-century mansion and the only private inn on Cumberland Island, the rooms were nearly full Sunday and everyone was planning to stay put through the wet weather, said Dawn Drake, who answered the phone at the inn's office on the Florida coast.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers are also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds, which had reached 65 mph (105 kph) Sunday. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

But business was booming at Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials all along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

In Jacksonville Beach, Fernando Sola said business was booming at his Happy Faces Ice Cream truck. A bus full of tourists from South Carolina had stopped to buy some ice cream and watch the storm waters churn.

"There are actually more people than on a normal day. It's working out great," said Sola, taking a few moments away from scooping ice cream to people lined up in front of his truck.

Steady, heavy winds kicked up sand across the area, forcing onlookers to shield themselves with towels.

Jessica Smith and Chester Jaheeb decided to brave the waters despite many warnings for people to stay out. Jaheeb, who was born in India but lives in Jacksonville, said he had never experienced a tropical storm before.

"We were at a certain part that started pulling us out, like the rip current, so we decided to come to shore," said Smith, 17.

Joe Murphy, a spokesman for the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island, said he was not seeing a flood of checkouts or people trying to get off the island. Outdoor dining had been moved inside and the hotel set up movies and family game activities, but the hotel had no plans to board up or move patio furniture inside.

Beryl was centered about 110 miles (177 kilometers) east of Jacksonville, and about 120 miles (193 kilometers) southeast of Brunswick, Ga. Current forecasts have it making landfall late Sunday or early Monday, though tropical storm conditions with heavy rain and wind were to reach shore hours sooner.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina. Once Beryl comes ashore, it was expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday before slowly moving back out to sea.

On Tybee Island, a barrier island not far from Savannah, water off the beaches was closed for swimming Sunday. Tybee Island fire Chief C.L. Sasser said winds of up to 42 mph were creating "horrendous water currents." Only people with flotation devices strapped or tethered to their bodies were being allowed into the water, and they were being cautioned to not venture in farther than knee deep.

"Even if you're standing in waist-deep water, the current can sweep you out quickly," he said.

His ocean rescue team pulled a total of 48 people from the water on Saturday, he said, including about 27 that were considered to be in life-threatening conditions. One man who was sucked under the water was rescued by friends and onlookers and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A band of showers soaked the beaches late Sunday morning, causing crowds to thin, Sasser said. With alternating rainy and sunny weather forecast throughout the day, he said he expected the crowds on the sands to ebb and flow.

In South Carolina, Janice Keith with the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said the office hadn't fielded any calls from concerned tourists.

In Beaufort County, emergency management deputy director David Zeoli said officials were continuing to monitor the storm and encourage people to have a plan in case conditions get worse.

Zeoli said winds had kicked up in the area that includes Hilton Head Island, a popular golf and beach destination. "It's just a wet day here," he said.

Three years later, Sinclair Lewis applied it in his novel, ?Babbitt?. The word appeared in dictionaries in 1917.

Nowadays, most dictionaries define the word as possessing to complete together with the Nationwide Affiliation of REALTORS?. On the other hand, this does not cease language from flowing around the boundaries of legislation. Several persons make use of the term ?realtor? interchangeably with ?real estate agent?. In speech, it may well be overlooked, but considering that the NAR doesn?t want the people who will not be licensed by the Board to become combined up with their own members, they are much less forgiving with the inappropriate use of ?realtor? in print, even by REALTORS? their selves.

To start with, if you?re not a REALTOR? and you also move oneself off as one, with all the utilization of Realtor or REALTORS within your web page or your marketing, NAR is gonna get medieval on yo? assets. It usually begins using a cease-and-desist letter, but gets worse from there. They aren?t out to obtain you; they watch you as an achievable future REALTOR?! Nonetheless, they are doing possess the power, as the holders with the trademark, to successfully initiate authorized motion towards those who use the word outside of their guidelines, even as being a domain name. So, perform great.

Domain names are tough, even for a REALTOR? in great standing. For instance, you are completely absolutely free to sign up HepzibahSnigglesworthRealtor, if Hepzibah Snigglesworth is actually your name, but don?t squander your money on ImaRealtorwhocanmakeallyourdreamscometrue. Likewise, should you attempt to register CrappoRealtor and you?re not a resident of Crappo, MD, the NAR won?t appear upon you having a pleasant eye. If you?re a resident of Fairdealing, MO, although, you may be capable of snag FairDealingRealtor. You may sign-up TheBestEverRealtor if the Greatest Ever may be the name of the business.

Making use of versions on REALTOR? can also be frowned on. Creative misspellings, phrases that reveal that you simply are something but a REALTOR?, even reproduction for novelty items like T-shirts can constitute infringement. You are going to have complications if you want to title your Excellent American Real estate agent Novel, ?Realtors of Crappo?. It really is generally very best to get in touch with the NAR when in doubt and get their guidance.

One place where you might see some versions on NAR?s protection of its trademarks is the information. Because journalists have their own standards to stick to, it?s doable that REALTOR? might be employed without the figuring out trademark symbol. Newspapers do this since trademarks split up the flow of posts and make them hard to read. Even so, NAR is about the lookout for articles that use real estate agent interchangeably with ?real estate agent? or as being a label for something aside from what NAR has designated it for.

When doubtful, utilize a synonym, euphemism, simile, metaphor or get in touch with the NAR. The NAR isn?t out to obtain you, however it will protect its appropriate to arranged requirements for its trademarks. The misuse of phrase REALTOR? is something that the NAR requires very seriously, but using a little study, it?s simple to learn what?s suitable use.

(AP) ? Britney Spears has been on the job just two days and she's already proving to be a popular judge on "The X Factor."

The pop queen is also growing into her role as critic on the Fox singing contest show.

"The X Factor" staged its first auditions for the upcoming season Thursday and Friday in Austin, Texas, and judging by the boisterous cheers and the "I love you Britney!" calls from the crowd, the Grammy-winning singer is already a hit in her new role.

She's also showing she's not afraid to vote against contestants or disagree occasionally with show creator Simon Cowell and fellow judges Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid.

"I feel like your song was just in the wrong key," Spears told a contestant Friday, adding that choosing a different song would have been "more interesting."

She told another contestant, "Your voice is really sweet, but I feel like you need a little more training."

Spears has yet to develop the chattiness that Lovato, also a new judge, had with the often nervous contestants. While Spears was direct but brief with her opinions, Lovato demonstrated a more casual rapport with the singers, even when it was clear they weren't going to be cut.

Spears, 30, was brought in to help boost ratings for "The X Factor" after its debut season fell short of Cowell's predictions. The former child performer became an international star with her 1999 debut album, "... Baby One More Time." Other hits have come ("Oops!... I Did It Again," ''Toxic") but her personal life has been difficult, with rehab spells and time in a psychiatric ward.

For her judging debut, Spears wore a bright neon pink dress and she sat next to Cowell during Friday's auditions. The two routinely chatted during the breaks between singers.

It is quite simple to build your own replacement window screen. Although some windows may use special screens, they can still use an external screen thanks to adapters.

Always make sure the power is turned off when working near an electrical area. If you neglect to do this, you increase the risk of sustaining damage, injury or even death.

Keep your floors protected while painting. If you don?t, you will have quite a mess on your wood floors or carpeting. A cheaper way to get this done is to layer old newspapers. If you don?t have enough newspaper lying around, sheet plastic is really affordable, and paint cloths can be reused again and again.

When you are looking for a contractor to help you with home improvement, compare the estimates you are given very carefully. Create a detailed list of what you want improved and make sure that list remains the same for each contractor. If you keep changing what you want done, you will never be able to figure out which contractor is going to give you the best price.

Before pulling up stakes and moving to a new home, think about putting some effort into home improvement in the home you now have. Instead of getting used to a whole new set of design idiosyncrasies in a new home, a renovation lets you modify your existing living space to exactly suit your desires. A home improvement project is also less stressful and more affordable than buying a home.

Remember to make your caulking nice and pleasing to the eye. Check your sink and bathtub frequently to be sure that the caulking is still good. Small holes can develop causing water to get into your walls which could result in mold. If water is permitted to go through the holes and cracks in the caulking, it will make its way below the floor, making it rot. Never reapply caulking without first eliminating every last bit of the old, damaged caulking. Before you begin, the area should be thoroughly cleaned and dried. This will allow the new caulk to form a waterproof seal and adhere properly.

A great way to improve your households safety is to discuss with the entire family the different escape routes available if needed. When things go wrong, people can panic easily, and end up injured because of not doing anything. Plan a safe and simple way to get out the house incase of an emergency. Make the meeting, discuss the necessities and stay prepared for the unexpected.

If you are new to home improvement, you should definitely seek the advice of someone that specializes in the task you hope to complete. Professional advice can help you save a lot of money and time. If you dive in without the advice of a professional, you may very well regret it.

A simple coat of paint, inside or out, can do wonders for a home. A simple paint job can clean or spruce up walls in a jiffy, and choosing a different hue can give a room a new look. If you?re tired of certain pieces of furniture, try painting them and replacing handles or knobs for a pleasing effect.

Barney Frank Jokes At Harvard: It's 'Entirely Legal To Call Me A Fag ...

video

Harvard followed up it?s undergraduate Class Day appearance by Andy Samberg yesterday with a speech from Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank, who gave the graduating class advice for the future and good wishes. He also took some time for an aside on how he supports free speech? whether it be the time he compared a woman at a town hall meeting ?unfavorably to a dining table? to someone calling him a ?fag,? which he was fine with but didn?t recommend it ?if you?re in the banking business? while he was head of the House Financial Service Committee.

RELATED: Yes, Andy Samberg?s Harvard Graduation Speech Today Included A Nic Cage Impression

?I?m not for limiting what anybody says about anybody,? Rep. Frank asserted, including ?the woman who I compared unfavorably to a dining room table? who compared Obamacare to Nazi policies. ?I was glad that she had the right to say something so contemptible,? he noted. To prove that, he told the story of his support for amending hate crime legislation to include sexual orientation and identity into the law. Many legislators told him ?that would endanger their ability to say anti-gay things,? but he asserted ?we are not trying to criminalize speech.? ?Let me be very clear? if this bill passes tomorrow, it will still be entirely legal to call me a fag? I just wouldn?t recommend it if you?re in the banking business.?

Beltran hits 14th HR as Cardinals win

By R.B. FALLSTROM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:32 p.m. ET May 23, 2012

ST. LOUIS (AP) - When the first five San Diego Padres reached safely, it looked as if it'd be a long night for rookie Lance Lynn. The St. Louis Cardinals pitcher showed veteran presence after that.

Lynn came back with five scoreless innings after a three-run first Wednesday night and the Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres and former St. Louis postseason star Jeff Suppan 6-3 for a three-game sweep.

At 7-1, the 25-year-old right-hander is tied with the Phillies' Cole Hamels for the major league victory lead.

"When you give it up, you can't keep giving it up or it's going to be a long night," Lynn said. "You don't have to change your approach, you just have to grind more, concentrate more, dig deep and make a pitch when it matters."

Lynn entered the season with one career victory, and didn't seem overly impressed with his total this year.

"We've got seven wins when I'm pitching," he said. "That's all that matters."

Carlos Beltran hit his NL-leading 14th home run for the go-ahead runs, also his first homer in 10 days. Before missing four straight starts with a sore right knee, Beltran had homered six times in six games.

"You can't expect that to happen every week, you know," Beltran said. "I just hope that I can go out there and feel good at the plate and be able to contribute.

"Being able to hit home runs like that, it happens once or twice in a season."

David Freese snapped a 3-for-34 slump with a homer and RBI single as the Cardinals had more than enough offense minus injured starters Lance Berkman, Jon Jay and Allen Craig. Berkman is out at least six to eight weeks with a knee injury.

"Lance, we don't know what's going to happen with him, and some other guys are battling injuries," Beltran said. "But we as a team have to fight with what we have and right now we're doing a pretty good job."

Will Venable hit his sixth career leadoff home run and also doubled and singled for the Padres.

San Diego was held to three or fewer runs for the seventh straight game and fell to a major league-worst 4-13 on the road.

Suppan (2-3) labored for 97 pitches in 4 2-3 innings, giving up five runs in his fifth start for San Diego.

The 37-year-old right-hander was the 2006 NL championship series MVP for the Cardinals and was the lone pitcher on that World Series title team to win a game in each round. The St. Louis fans hadn't forgotten, giving him a warm ovation with some standing as he left the mound.

"It was very nice, I was very grateful," Suppan said. "I was still in the moment of my outing, so I wasn't able to take it all in."

Suppan, who spent all last year in the minors, entered 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA in four career starts in St. Louis as a member of the visiting team.

Matt Holliday singled to start the fifth ahead of Beltran's first homer in 10 days. Freese's ninth of the year made it 6-3 in the seventh.

"Sometimes you've just got to start over and get back to the basics and figure some things out," manager Mike Matheny said of Freese. "It looked like it worked pretty good for him today."

Lynn, in the rotation for injured Chris Carpenter, recovered from a three-run first. He went six innings and worked out of frequent trouble with the Padres stranding nine runners while he was on the mound.

"Well, he wiggled out of a few jams and we just couldn't get that big knock, that ball in the gap to really break his back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "And Beltran really broke our back with that home run."

Victor Marte and Marc Rzepczynski worked a scoreless inning apiece and Jason Motte finished for his eighth save in 11 chances.

Venable hit his third homer of the season on Lynn's second pitch. The first five Padres reached safely with Chase Headley's RBI single making it 2-0. Cameron Maybin was caught stealing for just the second time in 15 chances on a pitchout to hurt San Diego's shot at a bigger inning.

Jesus Guzman, San Diego's cleanup man with no homers, was hit by a pitch his first two times of the season in his first two at-bats.

Skip Schumaker had an RBI double and the Cardinals added RBI singles from Freese and Matt Adams to tie it in the bottom of the first. Suppan needed 54 pitches to get through two innings, escaping damage in the second after walking Schumaker and Holliday with two outs.
