Theater Arts ? Blog Archive ? Investing Strategy: Covered Call ...

Experts in the field of investment believed that it is important to invest your hard earned dollars properly and in a secure manner. They believed that you money should work for you and for you to enjoy life. When talking about investment, many people who have money on their pockets aren?t that sure if it is worth their time and effort. Not everyone are fully aware how investments run your hard earned dollars. But according to experts, there are many kinds of investments that are worth the risk. One investment that many experts are very well aware of is covered call.

For someone who hasn?t heard covered call, they could think that this is like a direct calls to and from other countries. Well, this is not your ordinary telephones or all about making phone calls. Covered calls is one of the investment strategies that experts used. This investment won?t get you the idea of making big in just a short period of time. This is among the income oriented approach that focuses your money to progress slowly.

What are the things that you need in writing covered calls?

First and foremost you need to have a brokerage account. The next you that you should have is a permission that qualifies you to write a covered call. Many accounts will allow writing covered calls in default mode or there just complete an easy form so that you can write and sell call options. You also need to have at least 100 shares of stock or funds to buy one. Last but not the least is your portfolio and wide selection of quality trade options.

You need to familiarize with different terms like short and long. Long in this kind of investment means that you bought a particular share and you are entitled to receive some profit if the worth rises. Short is selling a share even if you don?t own it. Investors would short a share if they predict that the share will decrease and depreciate in value. In the long term, the investors will have to buy that share they sold for a lesser price. This is where investors get their income or profits in the long run.

Other terms that you need to remember is calls and puts. Call option is where the buyer of a share has the right to call any price or is sometimes called strike price of that particular share before the share expires. This kind of investment is simply the same as any other investment since it has its own risk and failures as well. It is important so that you can know the risk and know this investment better.

Gaming firms 888, Caesars extend licensing deal to U.S. (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? 888 Holdings Plc said a unit of private equity-owned Caesars Entertainment Corp extended its UK software licensing agreement with the British online gaming company to the United States.

888 said the agreement would see its arm, Dragonfish, power a selection of private poker brands of Caesars, one of the largest casino operators in the United States and owner of the famed Caesars Palace, once online gaming is permitted under the new regulatory regime.

"Utilising 888's state of the art poker platform, the agreement will allow the launch of a real money offering immediately as either Federal or state based regulation is finalized and upon licensing by gaming authorities," 888 said in a statement on Tuesday.

As U.S. states scramble for tax revenue, the potential for legalizing online poker has led casino and gaming companies MGM Resorts International and Boyd Gaming to unveil a plan to partner with online poker company Bwin.party Digital Entertainment.

Last month, 888 had said it expected core profit for 2011 to be significantly above market expectations, aided by strength in its casino and poker businesses.

888 shares, which have risen 41 percent in the last three months, closed at 47 pence on Monday on the London Stock Exchange, valuing the company at about 165 million pounds.

62 below: Deep freeze grips much of Alaska

Downtown Anchorage, Alaska, has seen a snowy and icy winter, including this scene from Jan. 18.

By msnbc.com staff

Even if it has been warmer than usual in much of the United States, there's no denying?Alaska is seeing a real winter, even by its standards.

Anchorage is shivering through one of its coldest January's on record, while in Fairbanks, folks preparing for a sled dog race were being tested by temperatures nearly 50 degrees below zero. Farther inland, Fort Yukon has ranged from minus 50 to minus 62 degrees over the last three days, getting close to its record of minus 78.

Anchorage's average temperature for January has been 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the Alaska Daily News reported. That's well below its average of?15 degrees, and only three other years (1947, 1925 and 1920)?have been colder, National Weather Service data show.

It's so cold for Anchorage, the Daily News reported,?that:

  • Cross country ski?practices by the Junior Nordic League have been canceled due to temps dipping below the official cut-off of minus 4 degrees.
  • Tow trucks are so busy helping folks with dead car batteries that it can take up to four hours to get service.
  • Some schools have had only a handful of outdoor recess days this month.

In Fairbanks, where the Yukon Quest sled dog race starts on Saturday, some racers have had a hard time moving their trucks?around due to a freeze that kept engines from starting, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.

Fort Yukon, for its part, dipped to 62 degrees below zero on Saturday, then hit?59 below on Sunday, the National Weather Service reported.

The deep freeze is in addition to the record snow and blizzard conditions seen earlier this month in towns like Cordova and Valdez. Even Anchorage is on track to see a record snow season, having received?more than twice its?average amount so far.

76ers rout Bobcats in front of 'Fresh Prince' (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? Lou Williams scored 17 points and Jrue Holiday had 15 to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Charlotte Bobcats 89-72 on Friday night.

Jodie Meeks scored 14 points for the Sixers, who bounced back from a rare home loss and still haven't lost two straight games all season.

The Sixers won in front of co-owners Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The Hollywood power couple had a front-row seat for their first Sixers game of the season. Their son, Jaden, also watched the Sixers romp. Fans rhythmically chanted "We've got Will Smith! and the actor with the megawatt smile pointed toward them in appreciation.

The Bobcats scored only 10 points in the first quarter and lost their seventh straight game. Kemba Walker scored 14 points.

The Sixers improved to 9-2 at home.

While fans in Los Angeles and New York are accustomed to the A-list celebrity courtside sightings, Smith's presence was a big deal in the locker room.

Holiday, a California native who played at UCLA, suggested he could become Smith's latest sidekick, in a lineage that includes D.J. Jazzy Jeff and Carlton.

"We have the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the Fresh Prince of Hollywood," he said, smiling. "We can team up. That would be awesome."

Evan Turner and Holiday discussed which Sixer could dance the best Carlton, a move made popular in Smith's TV show, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Both agreed it would be forward Lavoy Allen. Turner met Smith once before in California and hoped he would visit the locker room after the game.

"Who doesn't like Will Smith? He's one of the best actors of all time," Turner said. "That would definitely be dope."

Holiday scored seven points in the first to get them off and running and stretch the lead to as many as 26 in the first half. Led by Williams' 10 points in the second quarter, the Sixers made 13 of 20 shots and continued to rough up the worst teams in the East to pad their solid record.

At one point in the first half, Williams had 12 points off the bench ? the same total as Charlotte's starting five.

Next week can start to prove if the Sixers are a legitiatate strong team in the East or one that has benefitted from playing the Wizards three times. Orlando, Chicago and Miami all play at the Wells Fargo Center.

There was no suspense in this one. Bobcats coach Paul Silas was hit for two quick technicals and was ejected with 4:38 left in the second quarter. He wasn't there to watch the Bobcats miss 13 of 19 shots in the third.

Early in the game, Walker tried to save a ball from going out of bounds and threw it into the bottom of the backboard.

The Sixers did their best to make Smith, a Philadelphia native, feel at home. There was the "Carlton Cam" and "Get Jiggy With it" cam for fans to dance along with and stay entertained during the rout.

Like Silas, the Smith family had seen enough and skipped out on the second half.

Notes: The 76ers signed center Francisco Elson. This is Elson's second stint with the Sixers. ... The Sixers gave away Holiday bobbleheads. "I look 50," he said.

Longtime Oprah associate exits OWN (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Jan 26 (TheWrap.com) ? Another day, another shakeup for Oprah Winfrey's struggling network OWN.

Lisa Erspamer, the network's executive vice president of production and development, left on Wednesday. An OWN spokesperson told TheWrap in a statement that Erspamer is leaving "by mutual agreement to pursue other opportunities."

Erspamer was no casual employee of Winfrey's. She came aboard the network in January 2010 as a 15-year veteran of Winfrey's Harpo Productions, Inc., and had been the co-executive producer of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" since 2006. During her tenure at "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Erspamer oversaw key events such as Winfrey's two-part interview with Whitney Houston, and the now-infamous car giveaway.

Rita Mullin, senior vice president of content strategy for Discovery Fit & Health, will step into Erspamer's position in the interim. In addition to Discovery, Mullin has also served as vice president of development at TLC, where she developed such hits as "Jon & Kate Plus 8" and "18 Kids and Counting."

Erspamer's exit is the latest in a string of departures, voluntary and otherwise, for the fledgling network. Last May, CEO Christina Norman was replaced by Discovery Communications COO Peter Liguori. (Winfrey herself assumed the title of "permanent CEO" of the network in July.) More recently, longtime Winfrey pal Gayle King left to take a seat at CBS' morning offering "Early Show," while OWN's programming boss Rod Aissa jumped ship to Oxygen Media earlier this month.

Despite the tumult, there have been signs of life for OWN lately. Its new offering "Oprah's Next Chapter" premiered on January 1 to the network's biggest numbers since its January 2011 launch, with the second installment of the interview series growing 45 percent over the premiere, with 1.6 million total viewers.

Deadline first reported the news of Erspamer's departure.

Letters from jail reveal DWI man's despair

A man in New Mexico has been awarded $22 million after being tossed in solitary confinement for 2 years following a DWI arrest. KOB-TV's Marissa Torres reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com

A man arrested for driving while intoxicated and then forced into solitary confinement for two years tried to get?help by writing to the jail's nurse, but the only response he got was a dose of sedatives, his lawyer said.

Stephen Slevin, 57, was arrested in August 2005 in New Mexico?s Dona Ana County, charged with aggravated driving while under the influence and possession of a stolen vehicle, although Slevin maintains the car was lent to him by a friend. On Tuesday, a federal jury in Sante Fe awarded him $22 million in damages for enduring inhumane conditions in the Dona Ana County jail, which he emerged from "hollow," Matt Coyte, his lawyer, told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

Slevin had one medical examination after being arrested?and was labeled suicidal, his lawyer said. He was jailed in lieu of posting a $40,000 bond.

?They put him in a padded cell for three days, but they never give him any treatment; their policy is to then just put them in solitary? if there are mental health issues, Coyte told msnbc.com Wednesday.

Coyte described Slevin in court documents as suffering with lifelong mental illness. He told msnbc.com that at the time of his arrest, Slevin had been depressed, and was borrowing a friend?s car because he wanted to get out of Las Cruces, N.M., where he had been living at the time.

He was physically healthy, but desperate to get treatment for his depression that he had been suffering with prior to being in solitary confinement - a cell with no natural light that prisoners are in 23 hours a day, although often times, guards failed to even grant Slevin his one hour of daily recreation time, his lawyer told msnbc.com.

Slevin sent more than a dozen letters to the jail nurse starting days after he was arrested, NBC affiliate KOB.com reported.

?I have not slept in days,? says one letter from Sept. 4, 2005, a couple weeks into solitary confinement. ?I?m in a deep depression.? The letter also mentions his lack of appetite.

His mental decline
Two months later, KOB.com reported, Slevin wrote a letter again pleading for help, saying, ?My dreams have been both weird and bizarre.?

By the end of November 2005, he wrote, ?I?m afraid to close my eyes.?

Coyte, his lawyer, told KOB that if Slevin got any response at all, it was just to up his sedatives.

?He referred to a ?Dr. Don? [in the letters],? Coyte told KOB.com. ?There was no doctor looking after him. There was a nurse, the nurse practitioner.?

But the so-called nurse practitioner only had a bachelor?s degree in psychology and?no actual medical qualifications, KOB reported.

After a few months, Slevin gave up, writing: ?I don?t know how much longer I can go on.?

?That was when he fell into a delirium,? Coyte told KOB.com.

Meanwhile, correspondence with the outside world tapered off as well, Coyte told msnbc.com on Thursday.

?His sister was writing him letters and sending him money,? Coyte said. ?She thought he would get out soon enough; she would send him small amounts of money every few weeks.?

But when she didn?t hear back from Slevin, she became concerned. She called the jail, Coyte said, but was not given much information.

?She had no idea the condition he was in,? he said. ?She is on the other side of the country with limited means. She wrote letters and he responded at the beginning, but then he lost touch with her. If your family member doesn?t write back, you may feel like they don?t want to talk you anymore; it wouldn?t cross your mind that something like this was happening.?

It wouldn?t be until months later that Slevin?s sister, whose name and location Coyte did not give, found out what her brother was going through: Forced to pull out his own tooth because he was denied access to a dentist, he told reporters on Tuesday. Toenails curling around his foot because they were so long. Basically forgotten about in his dark cell for more than 22 months.

"[Jail guards were] walking by me every day, watching me deteriorate," Slevin told KOB.com. "Day after day after day, they did nothing, nothing?at all,?to get me any help."

Slevin?s sister and other family members actively fought for his release near the end of his detainment once they became aware of his plight, Coyte told msnbc.com Thursday.

?It was her and his aunt and various other family members who were calling legislators, calling county commissioners, saying, ?Where?s my brother??? he said.

'Deplorable' conditions
The answer, for most of his 22-month detainment, was that he was in ?deplorable? conditions of his solitary??pod,? court documents state,?except for a 14-day period in May 2007, when he was sent to New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute in Las Vegas, N.M., for a psychiatric review. He had lost a third of his body weight by that point, documents say, and had bed sores and a fungal infection on his skin.

?As your insanity builds, some people holler or throw feces out their cell doors,? Coyte said Wednesday. ?Others rock back and forth under a blanket for a year or more, which is what my client did.?

At the Behavioral Health Institute, Slevin was able to shower and to shave his beard, which had grown long and scraggly during his time in solitary, Coyte said. His mood improved. But after two weeks there, he was sent back to his solitary pod in jail for another month, at which point his mental state deteriorated to the point where he was deemed unfit to participate in his defense, and all charges against him were ultimately dismissed. He was released on June 25, 2007.

It's not clear why he was sent back to solitary after his stint in the mental health institute.

Dona Ana County officials were tight-lipped about the case, refusing to answer questions about whether any jail employees were reprimanded or fired over Slevin's treatment.

"We do not discuss personnel issues," Jess Williams, Dona Ana County's public information director, told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

Williams also wouldn't comment on whether?the $22 million the county was ordered to pay would come from taxpayer money, saying only, "Dona Ana County will?appeal the verdict."?

Coyte sued the Dona Ana County Board of County Commissioners, the County Detention Center, and the jail director and former medical director in December 2008. According to court documents, the county jail?s former medical director, Daniel Zemek prescribed ?complicated psychotropic medications? to Slevin without ever seeing him, and renewed prescriptions for him for at least 10 months without an in-person visit. Zemek left the county jail but an adequate replacement for him wasn?t provided, the court documents allege, so jail director Chris Barela continued to have Zemek prescribe medication to Slevin, despite not treating him.

John W. Caldwell, the defendants? attorney, did not return a phone call from msnbc.com on Thursday.

Coyte, Slevin?s attorney, said greed on the county?s part was partially to blame.

?Talk to the [Dona Ana] County Commissioners who were around in 2000 to 2004 who knew this stuff was going on, and didn?t care,? he said. ?Another side to this case is this jail was built to make money housing federal detainees. This is a border town. There are a lot of federal detainees from immigration issues, and the jail charges the federal government a particular amount of money for each detainee.?

Slevin was a county inmate.

?Federal inmates got better care than state inmates,? he said. ?There would be better psychiatric care for the federal inmates than for the state or county inmates.?

Slevin will take lifelong medication for his PTSD, although he continues to have support from his sister, Coyte said. Court records show he now lives in Virginia Beach, Va.
