At least 15 killed in sect attack in north Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Gunmen suspected to belong to a radical Islamist sect attacked a village in northeast Nigeria, tying up men, women and children before slitting their throats, killing at least 15 in the troubled region's latest attack, witnesses said Saturday.

The assault happened early Friday morning in the village of Musari on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the city where the sect known as Boko Haram first launched its guerrilla campaign of shootings and car bombings against Nigeria's weak central government. The gunmen shouted religious slogans and later ordered those there to be gathered up into a group, said Mshelia Inusa, a primary school teacher in the village.

"We heard some people chanting, 'God is great, God is great' amid sounds of banging on doors of houses at about 1 a.m.," the teacher said. "A voice was heard ordering people to be slaughtered and also voices of children were heard screaming."

Inusa said he and others later saw corpses with their hands tied behind their backs and their throats cut.

Later Friday morning, an ambulance arrived at the State Specialists Hospital in Maiduguri, accompanied by a group of military vehicles, a security guard said. Agitated soldiers ordered people away, but the guard said he counted at least 15 bodies being brought into the facility's morgue.

The guard spoke on condition of anonymity out of fears of angering either the military or the sect.

Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, a military spokesman, later issued a statement saying only five people had been killed in the village during the attack. However, military and police officials routinely downplay casualty figures because they are under increasing pressure from their superiors to minimize the perceived effects of the ongoing attacks by Boko Haram.

Boko Haram, which speaks to journalists through conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday. However, the attack mirrored other assaults carried out by the group as it expands its operations outside of cities in the northeast into rural towns and villages, where the security presence remains light and contact with the outside world remains difficult as the sect has destroyed a number of mobile phone towers recently.

The sect, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's Muslim north, wants the nation to enact strict Shariah law and release its imprisoned members. Despite a heavy military and police presence, the sect's adherents have continued to launch frequent attacks.

More than 780 people have been killed in Boko Haram attacks so far this year, according to an Associated Press count, making 2012 the worst year of violence attributed to the group. Boko Haram also has loose connections with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and Somalia's al-Shabab, according to Western military officials and diplomats.

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen also attacked another village Friday in Adamawa state on its border with neighboring Cameroon. Witnesses said that attack focused on the town of Maiha, where gunmen also shouted praises to God while setting fire to government buildings, a school and a prison. At least 35 prisoners were released from the prison in the attack, though 11 had been recaptured, police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim said Saturday.

Ibrahim said a civilian and a police officer were killed during the fighting.

And violence continued around the central Nigerian city of Jos, where ethnic, religious and political rivalries have caused mass killings in recent years. Authorities said at least seven had been killed in recent days around Christian villages in the rural plateau. Police said they were investigating the attacks.

(AP) ? After their 17th consecutive victory gave them a perfect month, the Los Angeles Clippers finally paused to admire their achievement.

"We got something extremely magical going on," said Caron Butler after the Clippers beat the Utah Jazz 107-96 on Sunday night to become the third team in NBA history to record a perfect month.

"When we win we usually jump up and down once or twice," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "Tonight we let them jump and down three or four times, so everyone had their fill."

The Clippers went 16-0 in December to join the 1995-96 San Antonio Spurs, which included Del Negro, and 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers as the only teams to go undefeated in a month. Their franchise-record winning streak is the longest since Boston won 19 in a row four years ago.

"I am amazed because I haven't done it since I've been in the league," said seven-year veteran Chris Paul, whose 19 points and nine assists helped his team maintain the league's best record at 25-6.

Butler led the Clippers with 29 points despite not playing in the fourth quarter and made all six of his 3-pointers, including five in the opening period. Jamal Crawford scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Blake Griffin piled up five fouls and was held to seven points after getting double-teamed.

"That shows our depth," Paul said. "Our bench stepped up amazing. On any given night it can be another guy."

The streak isn't talked about among the players and coaches. But it's a popular topic among everyone else.

"That's an incredible record to have," Utah's Derrick Favors said. "They've got 17 straight wins and they're playing hard. I know there's a lot of pressure on them to try to keep it up, and they're going to keep coming out and keep playing the same way."

Actually, it's just the opposite, according to Griffin, who said the last month "is the most fun I've ever had playing basketball."

"You don't really think about it that much. We're having a blast," he said about the streak. "It's not like it's one of these things where it's so much pressure."

Al Jefferson scored 30 points ? one off his season high ? to lead Utah, which fell victim for the third time during the Clippers' streak. The Jazz lost 116-114 on Friday when the Clippers rallied from 19 points down, and they were beaten 105-104 on Dec. 3, both times at home.

"It's frustrating," said Gordon Hayward, who had 16 points. "Knowing that they're a good team and knowing that we're always right there with them, knowing that we need to keep on playing good for 48 minutes."

The Jazz lost their third in a row and seventh in the last nine games.

"We can't make any mistakes against them, especially on their home floor because they make you pay for it," Jefferson said.

Crawford keyed a 10-5 run to open the fourth, highlighted by a 3-pointer and a fast break pull-up jumper that helped the Clippers extend their lead to 89-81. Paul and Griffin didn't join the second unit until 5:55 remained and Utah had closed within four on a basket by Favors.

That was as close as the Jazz got. The Clippers made 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch and their defense held Utah to one field goal in the final 3:38.

"It was a grind-it-out game, nothing pretty about it," Crawford said. "We got us a nice thing going and we got to keep it going."

Los Angeles stretched its lead to 71-59 in the third quarter, when Butler scored 10 of their first 17 points.

From there, the Jazz closed on a 17-8 run to pull to 79-76 going into the fourth. Utah briefly took its first lead since early in the game when Jefferson scored over Lamar Odom, but the Jazz committed two costly turnovers in the final 49 seconds.

Paul got fouled and made both free throws, and then Matt Barnes stole the ball from Jamaal Tinsley and fed Paul on the break. He missed but Crawford was there to tip it in and restore the Clippers' lead.

"We haven't been playing our best basketball the last few games," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. "We're playing hard, but we've got to be a little smarter and not make the kind of mistakes we made down the stretch."

The Clippers shot 62 percent en route to a 54-45 halftime lead, with Butler scoring 17 points in the first quarter. Utah led briefly to start the game when Jefferson scored eight of their first 13 points.

NOTES: Los Angeles improved to 11-3 at home. ... The Jazz fell to 6-13 on the road. ... Clippers F Ronny Turiaf says his right elbow is "messed up." He said he hurt it a couple games ago when he felt discomfort while boxing out. ... Odom's ankle is bothering him. ... The Clippers haven't lost since Nov. 26 at home against New Orleans.

ReadWrite ? FISA Fail: Senate To Keep Spying On Citizens

In a blow to civil rights, and seemingly the Fourth Amendment, the Senate this morning voted to approve a bill that reauthorizes a foreign surveillance program that keeps tabs on peoples' emails and phone conversations, all without a warrant. While the whole country waits on pins and needles for the Fiscal Cliff to fall out from under us, this could be even more important, as our freedom of liberty is truly threatened, all in the name of national security.?

It's called FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and it's set up to allow the monitoring of U.S. citizens who speak with foreigners.?The vote extends the life of the bill for the next five years.?Since the House already gave the bill the thumbs up, it now goes to the President to get his seal of approval, which he is expected to sign.?

The problem is this basically gives the U.S. government carte blanche in spy-mode when it comes to eavesdropping on the communications of suspected terrorists. They don't need court approval now. They can just listen on the pretense that it makes our country safer from a possible terrorist attack. Of course, determining just who is a foreigner and figuring out their real or perceived "threat" to America is another problem in and of itself. On top of that, it's a lot of leeway and freedom for law enforcement and the government to listen in on the often mundane conversations between its citizens.?

Road Blocks And Detours

There's been some very real criticism of FISA, and it's even crossed normally staunch party lines.

The biggest detractors to the bill were Sens. Ron Wyden (D-OR), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Rand Paul (R-KY), all of whom wanted to protect the rights of people being unfairly monitored.

During the discussion session, Wyden point-blank asked if any U.S.-based email or phone communications were picked up by the government during surveillance of foreign targets to which?Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) replied that those incidences were "few" and "inadvertent." In other words, yes, it has happened.

They proposed amendments to?extend the bill for three years instead of five, declassify FISA court opinions, and clarify that the Fourth Amendment protects U.S. citizens from intelligence-related searches done overseas. All three amendments were shot down.

Here's a full video of Wyden's impassioned yet failed attempt to sway the Senate:

Now What

Marc Rotenberg, the executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, (EPIC), calls this a missed opportunity by the Senate to establish safeguards to Fourth Amendment rights and create much needed government accountability. Earlier this year, Rotenberg testified before a House judiciary Committee on this very issue. Yet the House didn't heed his words and voted the same way the Senate did today.

With the heavy risk of misuse and abuse, Rotenberg?calls FISA one of the biggest failures of Internet security, right there with?the Patriot Act.

"It's a very broad authority," he said. "Our view has been when you create broad authority for the government, you need to create counter oversight."?

Jim Fenton, the chief security officer at the digital identity company?OneID, has worked with intelligence agencies before. He says his experience included professionalism and good intentions, but warned that a lack of transparency with FISA, and rules that legislatures are confused with does not bode well for public perception of those groups.

"The government's lack of transparency about surveillance doesn't inspire trust," he said. "We should be working to differentiate ourselves from countries who aren't as free in terms of surveillance of its citizens."

That sentiment is shared online. In a post today by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Trevor Timm?called Congress disgraceful.

"This vote was nothing less than abdication by Congress as its role as watchdog over Executive power, and a failure of its indepedent obligation to protect the Bill of Rights," Timm wrote. "The FISA Amendments Act and the ongoing warrantless spying on Americans has been, and will continue to be, a blight on our nation and our Constitution.?

So, where does this leave us now??

With the battle in Congress over, and the President expected to sign, the spotlight turns to the Supreme Court. In the next few months, the highest court in the land will pen an opinion on a case that highlights the problems with FISA:?Clapper Vs. Amnesty International, the ACLU's challenge to FISA, which will determine whether citizens will have the ability to sue the government in cases of unlawful surveillance under FISA. The opinion is expected by summer 2013 and will set a precedent if people can go to court to bring these challenges.

"We've got out fingers crossed," Rotenberg said. "There has to be more public accountability."

According to the Boulder Daily Camera , the spider was able to hunt down fruit flies in her sealed space environment on the International Space Station. The spider managed to survive despite a miscalculation on the amount of food needed for the mission.

The Johnson jumping spider (species Phidippus johnsoni). arrived at the Smithsonian's Insect Zoo this past Thursday. By, Monday it had expired.

The Boulder Daily Camera reported:

"Neffi, of a species that typically enjoys a lifespan of about one year, was 10 months old. Monday's passing of the so-called "spidernaut," according to the Smithsonian, was due to natural causes. However, the Smithsonian conceded that no necropsy was performed on the deceased arachnid.

The experiment that made Neffi famous was conceived as part of the NASA-sponsored YouTube Space Lab contest in which two student-proposed studies were selected from thousands submitted worldwide by video. Amr Mohamed, 18, of Egypt, suggested examining whether a spider normally dependent on gravity for catching its meals would be able to adapt, and eat, in a micro-gravity environment."

According to NASA, Mohamed's project was designed to look at whether jumping spiders, like the zebra and red-backed species, can adapt their hunting abilities to microgravity. Jumping spiders do not build webs for catching their food. These particular spiders hunt using their excellent vision to track and stalk prey, jumping and striking with a lethal bite -- similar to cats hunting mice.
?

?"I have always been fascinated by science because with a handful of equations, I can explain the world around me," said Mohamed in his Meet the Winner YouTube video. "The idea of sending an experiment to space is the most exciting thing that I have ever heard in my life."

Eventually, Mohamed's experiment was designed by Colorado University. It demonstrated that a spider was able to hunt down fruit flies in her sealed space environment on the International Space Station just fine -- until her food supply ran out, explained Stefanie Countryman, the projects manager for K-12 Educational Projects at CU's BioServe Space Technologies.

Protect Your New Computer with Webroot Internet Security Software ...

Get industry-leading virus protection from Webroot

We know you?re excited about trying out that brand new computer you got for Christmas, but before you log on to the Internet, make sure your system is protected against dangerous viruses and order a reliable malware solution from Webroot. Webroot offers a variety of powerful Internet security options, and right now you?ll save up to 75% on the new line of 2013 SecureAnywhere software when you order with a Webroot coupon.

Which Webroot Option is Right for Me?

PCMag just named Webroot?s SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013 as the best standalone antivirus program on the market today. They applauded the software for its small size (it?s just 1MB), incredibly fast scan-speeds (the software can search your entire computer in as little as six minutes) and gave it a perfect score for blocking malware. While the software is fast to download and use, it offers extra tools for tech-savvy users ? like an antiphishing component, a program-specific firewall control, and browser protection.

Normally, you?d pay $39.99 for Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013, but during a special holiday sale that ends Dec. 31, you can pick it up for just $9.99. The software is good for one full year, and it?ll protect your PC against any kind of cyber threat the Internet throws at it, including viruses, spyware, trojans, worms, keyloggers, and more.

For added mobile protection and password management tools, you?ll need to upgrade to Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Plus. The software works on up to three PCs or Macs for one full year, and for a limited time, you?ll get it for just $29.99 (regularly $59.99). Or, go with Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete and protect five PCs or Macs with everything from Antivirus and Internet Security, plus extra privacy and file protection, as well as the ability to automatically back up 25GB worth of your personal files and synchronize them across all your computers. It?s yours for just $39.99 (regularly $79.99).

Why Should Webroot?s Antiphishing Component Matter to Me?

Antifishing tools help protect you when a website tries to steal your passwords, which is important because cyber-thieves are continuously coming up with new ways to do that, from initiating screen captures to downloading the information you have stored on your clipboard. The Internet has been a dangerous place to surf for a while, but Webroot is making the waters a little more safe with its antifishing component, which is included on all three versions of its SecureAnywhere security programs.

Don?t risk ruining your brand new computer. Make sure it?s up-to-date with the latest antivirus software and download it at a huge discount with a software service offer.

PFT: Cowboy moved to noninjury list after fatal DUI

TagliabueGetty Images

Last week, it was widely believed that the transcript of the Paul Tagliabue-led bounty hearings would be released not long after his decision was issued.

That belief was fueled in large part by the expectation that Tagliabue would issue a ruling that did something less than wipe out the suspensions, resulting in the players pushing the case back to federal court and necessitating a full study of the testimony by Judge Helen Berrigan.

Unless the players who were determined to have engaged in conduct detrimental to the league opt to obtain a full exoneration (which is possible, but would be pricey), the transcripts will for now remain under wraps.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, both the NFL and Tagliabue are trying to ensure that the testimony never sees the light of day.

One reason is that the testimony from Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt has been described to us as ?brutal,? but also compelling and informative.

Coincidentally (or not), one paragraph contained in Tagliabue?s 22-page, single-spaced ruling describes Vitt as not credible.

?Vitt admitted to NFL investigators in 2012 that he ?fabricated the truth? when he spoke to an NFL investigator in March 2010 about whether there had been a bounty on [Brett] Favre,? Tagliabue writes.? ?[Vitt] later claimed that his admitted fabrication was just ?stretching the truth? because he failed to describe for investigators the emotionalism of the defensive team meeting the night before the NFC Championship Game.? As a result of Vitt?s admissions and conflicting testimonies, I find that any attribution made by him cannot be given particular weight.?

It would be nice to examine his full testimony with our own eyes.? Given that the NFL has made this case a matter of public concern, and in light of the fact that the suspensions arise from a desire to ensure public confidence in the game of professional football, the transcripts need to be released.

And I say that knowing that, once they are, I?ll be reading hundreds of pages of questions and answers, scouring through plenty of noting in search of those random, fleeting passages that shed light on the subject.

CSN: Do Patriots really need the No. 1 seed?

December 12, 2012, 12:06 am

Just two No.1 seeds have won a Super Bowl since 2003: the 2004 Patriots and 2010 Saints.

Half of the Super Bowl winners came from Wild Card weekend, half came from first round bye. Looking at that, there doesn't appear to be an advantage, but the guys on Sports Tonight still want a top two seed.

"More important for them to be No. 2 vs. a No. 3 than No. 1 vs. a No. 2," Mike Felger said.

What Felger is saying that a bye ? either one ? is huge, not so much the No. 1 seed.

But the Boston Herald's Steve Buckley says that it's the No. 1 seed that Bill Belichick and the Patriots are after.

"I was looking at that same chart 20 minutes in the news room. I don't care what it says, I don't care what the numbers say, and you're not supposed to do that. I'm fairly confident that Belichick is ticketing a course to get them the No. 1 seed. I just think it's an edge ? there's that old thing, you give Bill Belichick an extra week to get ready for a game, which is why the first round bye is important. And I just think he would rather have his team on his court, if you will, then to fly to Houston."

Check out the video for much more from Felger, Buckley, Gary Tanguay, and former Patriot great Troy Brown.

Strauss-Kahn, NY accuser settle lawsuit

Gonzalo Fuentes / Reuters

Former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn leaves his apartment in Paris, Monday. He was not required to appear at the hearing in New York.

By Reuters

A New York City hotel worker has settled a civil lawsuit she filed against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, whom she accused of sexual assault, a New York judge said on Monday.

The agreement ends a legal saga that began when Nafissatou Diallo, 33, told police that Strauss-Kahn attacked her in his suite at the Sofitel Hotel in Manhattan on May 14, 2011. Her suit alleged that a naked Strauss-Kahn emerged from the bathroom in his $3,000-a-night suite and forced her to perform oral sex.

Bronx Supreme Court Justice Douglas McKeon announced the two sides had reached a deal to end the litigation, but said details of the settlement, including the amount of any damages to be paid to Diallo, will not be made public.

The scandal forced Strauss-Kahn to resign his post as head of one of the world's most influential international finance organizations and wrecked his hopes of running for president in his native France. Prosecutors initially expressed confidence in the evidence, including DNA that showed a sexual encounter. But they dropped the criminal case in August 2011 after developing concerns about Diallo's credibility, including what they said were inconsistencies in her account of what happened immediately following the incident.

?

Accusers in such cases often hide from the media glare, and many media outlets protect their identities by not revealing their names.

But Diallo, the daughter of an imam from Guinea, broke her silence in July 2011, while the criminal investigation was still active, revealing her identity in interviews to Newsweek and ABC News.

She filed her civil lawsuit just weeks before the charges were dismissed, claiming he forced her to perform oral sex and caused her physical and emotional damage.

Strauss-Kahn, 63, filed a countersuit earlier this year against Diallo for defamation. He has said the sexual encounter was consensual but has admitted it was a "moral error."

The resolution of the civil case brings Strauss-Kahn closer to ending his legal troubles, which have persisted since his return to France after the initial incident.

Strauss-Kahn is awaiting a decision by a French court on his request to halt an inquiry to determine whether he should stand trial on pimping charges related to sex parties attended by him and by prostitutes.

He has quietly begun to resume his career in recent months, delivering speeches at private conferences and setting up a consulting firm in Paris.

Strauss-Kahn?was not required to appear personally in court in New York, but the judge ordered Diallo to be present.

Higher Education's Future: Discuss! - NYTimes.com

I saw the poster in the window of one of the New School buildings. ?The Future of Higher Education: A Panel Discussion, Monday, December 3, 6:30 ? 8.? To say that I have heard the topic discussed before would be an understatement (maybe 50 times), but I can?t resist the (unlikely) possibility that someone will say the magic word. At the very least I went in with a certain anthropological curiosity. What are they going to say this time?

?They? on this occasion were four college presidents, Stephen J. Friedman of Pace University, Robert A. Scott of Adelphi University, Debora L. Spar of Barnard College and David E. Van Zandt of The New School. The format was good. No prepared statements, just questions posed by Van Zandt acting as moderator and a freewheeling yet structured discussion.

The presidents took turns mapping out the new landscape of higher education ? runaway costs, skyrocketing tuition, low graduation rates, the promise and burden of technology, crushing student debt, the effects of globalization ? while at the same time expressing intermittent nostalgia for an older one. ?Whatever happened to the idyllic liberal arts model?? asked Scott. The answer was, first, that no one could afford it (no more specialized courses with two or three students, said Spar) and, second, that many students don?t seem to want it in an age when the value of courses and degrees is measured by the likelihood of future career earnings.

The tension between a market model and a Socratic model was nicely captured by two statements Spar made in succession. The first warmed my heart: ?We want to teach students things they don?t want to know.? That is, rather than regarding students as consumers (all the rage these days in places like England and Texas), we should regard them as yet-to-be-formed intellects who are often best served by saying no to their desires ? as we have traditionally. But then Spar immediately added, ?Yet, we can?t be too removed from the marketplace.?

So the trick may be to give students strong guidance and less choice (surely an overrated value) and at the same time to give them enough of what they want in the hope that they will swallow the medicine that will be good for them. But the things students want are expensive ? elaborate student centers, athletic teams and facilities, advisers and hand-holders (Spar?s term) of every kind. The trouble we?re in now is in part the result of being full-service institutions. We are, Spar lamented, ?caterers,? vendors offering an array of goodies calculated to appeal to every taste.

Friedman reported on another model situated between the online universities that have almost no classrooms and buildings and certainly no ?frills? (although just the other day I read about an online university planning to field a football team) and universities with campuses larger than many small towns. Some European universities, he said, ?are just schools, no teams, no dormitories, just ?brick and mortar?? and teachers; and these, he added, ?can be quite high-quality.? But no one picked up on what he said and I assumed the judgment was that minimalism was unlikely to be the ticket here.

The emphasis was on trying to figure out how to lower costs without changing the game completely. Some of the suggestions were larger classes, better use of facilities (i.e., Friday and even Saturday morning classes), cooperative consortiums in an effort to reduce duplication, tinkering with the four-year-two-summer model, a hybrid of online and in-person instruction, fewer administrators, smaller athletic programs. Nothing exactly new; in essence, the kind of tightening up imagined when people speak about closing loop holes as a way of avoiding the fiscal cliff. Sounds good and even virtuous, but will it really be enough?

The conversation bore more than a passing resemblance to the one we?re always having about entitlements. The word itself tells you why the problem is largely intractable. So it is in education. Salary costs and student aid were cited as the two largest expenses, and, as Spar pointed out, they are difficult to cut. She noted too that most colleges and universities have strong brands ? self-images they believe in and market ? and therefore have ?a vested interest against doing anything drastic.? Our costs, she concluded are ?baked in.?

Scott gestured in the direction of the elephant in the room when he observed that ?We?re having this conversation because the media is focused on tuition and debt.? In other words, the crisis is in part one of public relations. The newspapers are full of horror stories calculated to alarm and outrage the general public, and, Scott complained, ?too many people hear those stories.? There were more than a few references to a New York Times piece of just a few days before titled ?Saying No to College,? which reports on the growth of an ?uncollege? movement that is particularly attractive to young people who are used to ?seeking out valuable content free on Napster and BitTorrent.?

And then it was over, apart from a few questions from members of the audience, two of whom asked the presidents to define the purpose of higher education. The responses were honorable, but not edifying: ?to create effective citizens,? ?to prepare people for professional careers,? ?to become steeped in knowledge, skills and values.? The instrumentalism of these familiar justifications was disheartening, but not surprising given everything these presidents were going to face the next morning when a pleasant collegial conversation would be succeeded by the problems that were just barely addressed and certainly not solved this evening.

Not that I have anything more scintillating to offer. I?ll just wait for the next panel discussion and hope to hear the good news.

sprintblackSprint is said to be in talks to gobble up the remaining 49 percent of Clearwire it doesn't already own, according to new reports from CNBC and the Wall Street Journal. The deal is meant to sort out issues that Sprint has had in steering the decision-making process of Clearwire's business, sources told the WSJ, and it would help Sprint acquire the spectrum rights currently owned by Clearwire. Sprint is currently a wholesale customer of Clearwire's network.
