Lack of snow means business for golf courses

BOISE -- Local ski areas continue to fret over their lack of snow. But while that's made for a slow skiing season so far, it's meant an extended season (and additional revenue) for another popular activity in the area.

Mark Bryant is one of 30-some golfers who played a round at Warm Springs on Wednesday.

"Some of these guys are out here everyday," said Bryant.

He's one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, who is still playing golf all over Southern Idaho, which is quite something, considering it's officially winter in the Northwest.

Bryant says he's been out five times this year, but he knows other golfers who have been on the course pretty much every day in December.

"It's keeping us busy," said Peter Nichenko, Head Golf Pro at Warm Springs. "We've seen our fair share of golfers."

There's one obvious big reason that golf courses in the area are seeing good business, especially when compared to last year. It's the same reason that ski areas are seeing no business, a complete and total lack of snow.

"It's not good for the ski resorts, but people have to do something in the winter," said Nichenko. "So, we're seeing some extended golf."

"We've been golfing all winter long," said Nichenko. "There's no snow on the mountains, so all the guys who are the skiers, are out here continuing to golf. They're a little unhappy with that, but we've been having a wonderful time."

With no snow on the ground, once the morning frost melts, these courses are open for business. And business is pretty good. It's not what you'd see in the middle of summer, but it's good. That's especially true when compared to last year when most courses were closed by snow in November.

Now, course managers are reporting as many as ten times as much business this December than normal. That means a lot more green for businesses that are usually hibernating this time of year.

"It's good. We get a little bit of revenue," said Nichenko. "It keeps us busy. Better than sitting around, twirling our thumbs."

Course managers say they'll need to see snow sticking to the greens to actually close up shop. Right now, they're not seeing it. There's a possibility they just won't close, staying open until spring, the unofficial start of the next season.

OnLive gaming plays nice with Xperia Play controls ? Mobile ...

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone, which is targeted directly at mobile gamers, has a new twist that could add even more appeal. The Android handset, which already supports Sony PSP titles and has slide-out game controls, is fully supported by the OnLive cloud gaming service. Xperia Play owners could already use OnLive with on-screen controls, but can now play OnLive games with the phone?s unique, dedicated hardware controls.

While playing games on a touchscreen certainly works, support for the Xperia?s Play hardware game buttons is a smart move by OnLive. The handset may not be the most popular Android handset available, but for hardcore gamers and fans of the PlayStation Portable, it?s a nice compromise between capable smartphone and portable game machine. I?m actually surprised that OnLive didn?t launch with such support for the Xperia Play when it released its Google Android app earlier this month.

For those not familiar, OnLive is a cloud gaming service currently available for Windows PCs, Mac OS X and, most recently, Google Android smartphones and tablets. The games are played on servers in the cloud and displayed on the host computer or mobile device. Essentially, gamers can get a console experience on a smartphone because the games run on a high-powered server.

I?ve played some OnLive games on my Galaxy Nexus and it works well, provided you have a solid, stable web connection. However, I?m not a huge fan of playing complex console titles on a touchscreen: They often require multiple buttons and controls, which can be difficult to use on a small screen.

That?s where the Xperia Play hardware support comes into play. And OnLive also has a game controller, similar to one you?d use with an Xbox 360. I?ve been testing one out along with a beta version of the OnLive client for Apple?s iPad, so stay tuned for a video review coming soon.

While I finalize my review, you can try the OnLive service with a holiday special. Between Dec. 28 and Jan. 1, OnLive is having a ?Winter Three-For-All? promotion with free gaming hours and prizes; titles will include Borderlands, Super Street Fighter IV, and Saints Row: The Third.

Dad held after Facebook post showing bound girl

CHICAGO?? A Chicago man accused of binding his young daughter's hands, legs and mouth with tape and then posting a picture of what he'd done on Facebook was ordered held on $100,000 bond Wednesday.

After a brief hearing in which 21-year-old Andre Curry's attorney said the case had been "blown out of proportion" because it had been posted on the Internet, Judge Laura Sullivan made it clear she didn't agree.

Sullivan accepted each one of the prosecutor's suggestions, from not allowing Curry to have any contact with the 22-month old girl or any other minors to prohibiting him from using the Internet.

Curry, who was charged late Tuesday with a felony count of aggravated domestic battery, has to come up with $10,000 to be released from jail. He did not offer any explanation of his actions to the judge, but after the hearing Assistant Public Defender Anand Sundaram said Curry did not intend to hurt the child or punish her, but that he was just having fun.

"That's my belief," said Sundaram, whose own suggestion that Curry be placed on electronic surveillance was denied by the judge. Sundaram declined to comment further.

The child's photograph was circulated around the country before Curry's Facebook page was ultimately taken down.

During the hearing, Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said Curry was playing with his daughter Dec. 13 when, after seeing the girl playing with blue duct tape, took the tape and used it to tape the child's wrists, ankles and mouth, though the police report said he used painter's tape.

She said he then used a cell phone camera to take a picture and post it on his Facebook page with a note, "This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back," completing the sentence by adding, she said, a smiley face."

Antonietti said Curry has admitted to police that he used the duct tape and took a picture of his daughter.

During the hearing, Sundaram said his client works as a waiter at Applebee's, and said that if there was any history of abuse in the house, the state's Department Children's and Family Services would have reported it. A DCFS spokesman said Tuesday that the agency never has investigated Curry. Nor, prosecutors say, does he have any felony convictions as either a juvenile or an adult.

Curry is scheduled to return to court next Tuesday.

Philippines Searches for Hundreds After Typhoon Kills 650

(Reuters) - Rescuers searched for more than 800 people missing in the southern Philippines on Sunday after flash floods and landslides swept houses into rivers and out to sea, killing more than 650 people in areas ill-prepared to cope with storms.

Cagayan de Oro and nearby Iligan cities on Mindanao island were worst hit when Typhoon Washi slammed ashore while people slept late on Friday and early Saturday, sending torrents of water and mud through villages and stripping mountainsides bare.

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said 652 people were killed in eight provinces in the southern Mindanao region, with more than 800 missing.

"Our office was swamped with hundreds of requests to help find their missing parents, children and relatives," Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC, told reporters. "We're helping coordinate the search with local government, army, police and even other aid agencies."

Floods washed away entire houses with families inside in dozens of coastal villages in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

"This is the first time this has happened in our city," Vicente Emano, mayor of Cagayan de Oro, said in a radio interview. He said officials in the area did not receive adequate warning before the typhoon struck.

The state disaster agency said adequate warnings had been given to officials and residents three days before the typhoon made landfall on Friday.

Bodies piled up, soldiers build coffins

Disaster and health officials were struggling to deal with the scores of bodies that have been recovered. Some were stacked one on top of each other in under-staffed mortuaries that were unable to cope with the numbers of dead.

"I saw for myself bloated bodies of women and children, not less than 100," Vice President Jejomar Binay told Philippines radio as he toured the worst hit areas in Cagayan de Oro.

Binay distributed food packs and ordered the relocation of families living near waterways and other hazards.

Brigadier General Roland Amarille, head of an army task force in Iligan, said soldiers had been mobilized to recover bodies and build coffins.

"We need body bags and lime to deal with too many cadavers," Amarille said, fearing an outbreak of disease.

"Local mortuaries are no longer accepting cadavers and they are even asking people to bury the dead at once because there are too many bodies even in hallways," he said.

Most of the fatalities were from a slum area on an island sandwiched by two rivers in Iligan. "About 70 percent of the houses on the island were washed into the sea," Amarille said.

Mindanao island, the southernmost in the Philippines, is a mineral-rich region that also produces rice and corn but is not normally in the path of an average 20 typhoons that hit the Southeast Asian country each year.

"This poses challenges to us...We need to educate people with this kind of change in climate," Pang said. "The volume of rainfall for one month fell in just one day."

Rescued by cargo ship

Typhoons normally strike the central Visayas region and the south and east of Luzon, the main island in the north.

Carmelita Pulosan, 42, said she and eight family members and neighbors survived by sitting on top of the tin roof of their house as it drifted miles into the open sea after floodwater swept through their village.

The illustrations show the comic book characters performing breast exams and run with the words, ??When we talk about breast cancer, there?s no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against the enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor.?

Wording above the images, created by Maisa Chaves, reads ?Nobody is Immune to Breast Cancer.?

According to the Daily Mail, the association isn?t afraid to get creative in order to get the message out, previous ads made it appear as though spiders and cockroaches were living under the skin of women?s breasts as motivation to perform monthly self-checks.
