U.S. venture capital firms raise $20 billion in 2012 | Biz Beat Blog

2012 was a decent year for U.S. venture capital firms raising money to invest in startups and young companies.

Investors raised $20.6 billion from 182 funds last year, a 10 percent increase by dollar commitments from 2011, according to Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association. The number of funds fell 3 percent from a year ago.

In 2011, investors raised $18.7 billion from 187 funds, according to the report released today.

Fundraising slowed in the fourth quarter.

During the last three months of the year, 42 venture capital funds raised $3.3 billion. That?s down from 54 funds raising $6.2 billion in the same period last year.

Only one Dallas area fund raised money in the fourth quarter: Naya Ventures with $4.55 million.

The Dallas-based firm launched in December a new $50 million fund focused on early-stage mobile and cloud companies.
