Donna Summer died of lung cancer, feared triggered by asbestos ...

Donna Summer, died aged 63 after a difficult battle with lung cancer.

The singer, famed for her 1970s ?I Feel Love? hit, was in New York on 9/11 on the day of the Twin Towers attacks in 2001.? She was in her apartment nearby when the toxic cloud containing asbestos, lead and mercury filled the sky.

It is reported that Donna believed breathing the deadly dust triggered her lung cancer.

Speaking about the ordeal, she said ?I was really freaked out by the horrific experiences of that day. I couldn?t go out, I didn?t want to talk to anybody. I had to keep the blinds down and stay in my bedroom. I went to church and light came back into my soul. That heaviness was gone.?

The 2001 September 11th attacks killed around 3,000 people on the day. But the legacy of the toxic dust cloud is still claiming lives more than ten years later.

It is said approximately 1,000 people were exposed to the asbestos containing dust have died, and 350 of them from cancer.

Cancer rates have tripled amongst police officers who were at the scene. A further study established 60,720 people were at risk after inhaling dust and fumes.

The 9/11 Federal Health Director, Dr John Howard is quoted

?I think it is plausible that many people will die of the many conditions we?ve seen due to their exposure.?

Tributes have poured in for the singer from all over the world and her family made the following statement

?Early this morning, surrounded by family, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith?
