Blue Hill Memorial Hospital's 5K Fun Run training program set for ...

Opening day for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital?s 5K Fun Run training program is Saturday, June 2. This innovative, flexible and highly personalized set of fitness activities is available to community members at no cost.

With the approval of their primary care provider, individuals at all fitness levels can participate, and many features of the program are available year-round.

?Our goal is to give as many people as possible a comfortable, manageable and supportive way to move toward better health and fitness,? said physical therapist and fitness trainer Anne Piazza, who volunteers to lead the program. ?We are heading into our fifth year, and have worked hard to develop a program that truly has changed lives. Whether someone is new to exercise or a seasoned athlete, we can help each participant set and meet their goals.?

This year?s program will consist of 5K training for all levels, regardless of whether an individual wants to walk, jog, or run the distance.

?I assign participants to a beginner, intermediate or advanced group and develop personalized training programs,? Piazza said. ?Everyone has different goals and desires when it comes to health and fitness. I hope to be able to support each individual to overcome any obstacles in achieving their goals.?

There will be regular boot camps, four times a week, to help participants build strength and improve coordination while rounding out their overall fitness.

?Boot camps are a fun way to get strong, build confidence and burn calories. Participants have fun and get a good workout at the same time,? she said. ?Please don?t spend another year on the couch wishing you could participate more in life. We are not judgmental. Take that first step. Come to one of our Saturday morning sessions or after work boot camps and let us help you on your way towards a healthier life.?

According to Piazza, varied fitness activities are an essential way to ensure that individuals stay engaged in regular exercise. Last year, for example, she held a minitriathlon. This year, she again is scheduling bike rides and swims in the area. Piazza is also familiar with other wellness opportunities in the area, such as classes at the new fitness center at Tradewinds and local hiking groups.

The 2012 Fun Run is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, Aug. 4. Participants should get permission from their physician before starting this or any exercise program. Those with questions or interest in joining this year?s training program can email Anne Piazza at agpiazza@live.com or call 266-4338.
